Weapons, explosives seized after hours-long standoff with "disturbed" man in Wijlre

Police discovered a cache of weapons, explosives, and ammunition inside a home in Wijlre following an hours-long standoff with a man they described as “disturbed,” authorities confirmed Friday.

The standoff began Wednesday evening and drew a large emergency response to Brouwerijstraat. Negotiators and a tactical arrest team wearing bulletproof vests were deployed, according to regional broadcaster L1.

The man was ultimately subdued with a stun gun and taken into custody. Police said no one else was found in the home and ruled out any hostage situation.

The Defense Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (EOD) was brought in to inspect the property for hazardous materials. Authorities confirmed the presence of explosives, but declared the situation safe after a full inspection.

All items — including explosives, firearms, and ammunition — were seized. Police said they are investigating whether the weapons are connected to any ongoing cases.
