Dutch embassy in Iran closes to public amid heightened security risks

The Dutch embassy in Tehran, Iran, is closed to the public "until further notice" due to ongoing security concerns in the region, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Friday.

Despite the closure, embassy staff continue to work behind the scenes. "Especially in these situations, it is important that the Netherlands has eyes and ears on the ground and a team that protects our interests," the ministry said.

The ministry activated crisis teams overnight Thursday to Friday following Israeli airstrikes on Iran. Both Iran and Israel currently have a red travel advisory from the Dutch government, indicating the highest level of risk. While Israel’s red advisory was issued Friday, Iran has been under this warning since October 2022.

The red travel advisory warns that the security situation in Iran is poor, with widespread repression and a high risk of arbitrary arrests. “Iranian authorities can arrest and detain people without clear reason. Dutch nationals face this risk as well,” the ministry stated.

The ministry urged all Dutch citizens to avoid traveling to Iran. “No matter your situation: do not travel there. It is too dangerous,” the advisory said. Dutch nationals currently in Iran are advised to leave if it is safe to do so.

Officials also warned that the Dutch embassy in Iran will be unable to provide emergency assistance due to the situation. Citizens are encouraged to register with the Dutch Information Service to receive real-time updates on security threats or changes.
