Oranje midfielder Tijjani Reijnders signs for Manchester City in deal worth €70 million
Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders has completed a transfer to Manchester City. The English team will pay Reijnders current club, AC Milan, 70 million euros for the 26-year-old. This makes Reijnders the fourth most expensive Dutch transfer of all time.
Reijnders has signed a five-year contract in Manchester. He will likely make his debut for the club at the Club World Cup, which begins on Friday in the United States.
“I am ecstatic to be signing for Manchester City,” Reijnders said on the club’s website. “City are one of the biggest teams in the world, with the best coach, world-class players, and outstanding facilities. Under Pep Guardiola, City have won so many titles, and I want to help keep that going with a lot more success in the coming years.”
Reijnders played for AC Milan for two seasons, being named best midfielder in the Italian league, the Serie A last season. He had joined AC Milan from AZ Alkmaar, where he played 96 games in his five years.
It is the third signing that Manchester City have completed this summer after Pep Guardiola’s side finished in a disappointing third place last season. Rayan Ait-Nouri and Rayan Cherki have also been signed as part of the team’s rebuild.
The 70 million euros spent on Reijnders puts the born Zwollenaar in fourth when it comes to the most expensive transfers of a Dutch player. Frankie de Jong tops the list, with FC Barcelona spending 86 million euros on him in 2019. Matthijs de List (85.5 million euros) and Virgil van Dijk (84.7 million euros) are also above Reijnders on the list.
Reijnders is the second Oranje international to have finalized a transfer to the English Premier League this summer. Jeremie Frimpong will also be playing in England after Liverpool signed the 24-year-old for 40 million euros.
