Gunfight in Amsterdam leaves two critically injured; Police arrest five, hunt sixth
Two men were seriously injured Thursday evening during a violent altercation involving gunfire on the Geldersekade, a central Amsterdam street, police said. The incident triggered a large-scale emergency response, led to five arrests, and left investigators searching for a sixth suspect.
The confrontation, which took place in the early evening hours, involved multiple people who physically fought in the street. According to the Amsterdam police, the fight escalated and resulted in gunfire.
At least one of the two critically injured men suffered a gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel treated him at the scene. A trauma helicopter landed on the nearby Dam square to provide urgent medical support. The man was then transported to a hospital, where he was immediately taken into custody.
The second injured individual did not remain at the scene. He later arrived independently at a hospital with injuries sustained during the fight. He, too, was arrested upon seeking medical attention. A man who accompanied him to the hospital was also detained.
Later that evening, police arrested a man and a woman at the Pentagon, a square located just a few streets from the site of the shooting. These arrests brought the total number of people in custody to five.
Authorities confirmed late Thursday night that a sixth suspect is still at large. Police have not released names or specific details about the suspects or the nature of the altercation.
