No trains running to and from Rotterdam Centraal on weekend of May 24
No trains will be running to and from Rotterdam Centraal over the weekend of Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25. This is due to a replacement on the train protection system between Rotterdam Centraal, Delft Campus, Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel, and Barendrecht, Prorail reported.
The NS will deploy, replacing bus transport on various routes. The Rotterdam subway system will also still be available for use. Lengthy waiting times are expected, the NS reported. The NS ticket is not valid on the subway line E between Den Haag Centraal and Rotterdam Centraal. This route is expected to be severely crowded.
Travelers from Schiedam or Delft going towards Gouda or Utrecht are advised to travel via Den Haag Centraal. The NS ticket is valid on the Rotterdam subway between Schiedam Centrum, Beurs, Rotterdam Bleek, Capelsebrug, and Rotterdam Alexander.
The second to last weekend of May is the first of four in which there will be no trains between Rotterdam Centraal and the surrounding stations. The weekend of November 8 and 9 of this year, June 13 and 14 of next year, and November 7 and 8 of 2026 are expected to have no train traffic.
The system that ensures the correct operation of signals and switches in the area is outdated. "The lifespan of the train safety system expires after 25 years. After several major and minor upgrades, we now have to replace it," said the rail operator.
There will also be fewer trains running to and from Den Haag Hollands Spoor during next weekend on May 17 and 18. Travelers should expect extra crowdedness and longer waiting times than usual.
