Homeless man creates shelter for himself in Amsterdam underground trash container

The Amsterdam police discovered a homeless man living in an underground garbage container on Elandsgracht early this month. The man had “really set up a place for himself to sleep,” a community police officer said on Instagram on Monday.

Colleagues alerted the officer that someone might be sleeping in the garbage container, located across the street from the police station, and she went to have a look. She found that the man had forced the flap on the side of the container open so that he could crawl in and created a little shelter for himself.

The officer warned the man that this was a very risky place to sleep. “If the garbage truck had emptied the container, it could have been fatal,” she said.

The man himself wasn’t aware that he was doing anything wrong or dangerous, she said. “He really did not understand the fuss.”

This man is not the first person in the Netherlands to seek shelter in an underground container. Just a few weeks ago, the police found another man sleeping in a clothing container in Venlo.
