Netherlands falling behind Europe with adult vaccinations: healthcare experts
The Netherlands is lagging behind other European countries when it comes to vaccinating adults, according to a coalition of healthcare professionals. They urged the government to decide more quickly about implementing vaccines, saying that the foot-dragging puts vulnerable people at risk, NOS reports.
The coalition referred specifically to the renewed flu vaccines, which can prevent serious heart problems in people with a medical risk. The Health Council informed the government about the importance of these vaccines months ago. But the Ministry of Public Health, Welfare, and Sports has still not taken any steps to include them in the vaccination program, the coalition said.
The slowness of the government means that vulnerable groups like the elderly and people with chronic conditions have to wait longer for essential vaccines. “It is unworthy of a country like ours and cannot be justified,” said Margriet Schneider, chair of the Infectious Diseases Cooperation.
“Vaccination is a proven effective and safe way to prevent illness and death. Why wait if we can already offer protection?” said Ted Essen, chairman of the Dutch Immunization Foundation.
Vaccination is not only for yourself, but also for society, the coalition said, pointing to the return of diseases like measles to underline the importance of vaccination. “Every vaccination contributes to the protection of vulnerable people and prevents serious infectious diseases from returning,” said board member Sylvia van der Burg of the medical federation KNMG.
The coalition also includes the pharmacists’ organization KNMP, the Aidsfonds for people with HIV and AIDS, the Lung Foundation, and the Netherlands Seniors Network.
