Flights between Schiphol and London Heathrow resume after power outage closure

Flights between Schiphol and London Heathrow Airport are set to resume on Saturday after operations at the UK’s busiest airport were disrupted by a fire-induced power outage. Schiphol officials report no delays or cancellations for the approximately 30 scheduled flights between the two airports.

On Friday, dozens of flights between Schiphol and Heathrow were canceled after a fire at Heathrow caused a power failure, forcing the London airport to shut down. A total of 15 departures and 15 arrivals operated by KLM and British Airways were canceled at Schiphol. Several flights that were scheduled to land in London were instead diverted to Schiphol. However, operations have now returned to normal. “It’s back to business,” a Schiphol spokesperson confirmed on Saturday, following Heathrow’s announcement that it had reopened and was fully operational.

The impact on affected travelers remains unclear, as accommodations and rebookings vary by airline. Some passengers were placed on alternative flights, while others may have been provided hotel stays. Schiphol itself experienced a “normal evening” despite the disruptions, the spokesperson noted. Meanwhile, transportation alternatives between the two cities saw increased demand, with buses and trains to and from London carrying more passengers than usual on Friday.

Several aircraft that were originally scheduled to land at Heathrow on Friday were diverted to Schiphol due to the closure. These planes remain stationed at Amsterdam’s airport as airlines work to reposition them to their intended destinations.
