Christianne van der Wal resigns as Tweede Kamer member: ‘Not my place’

Christianne van der Wal, a prominent VVD politician and former Minister for Nature and Nitrogen Emissions, has announced her resignation as a member of the Tweede Kamer. In a statement on X, she described the decision as "not an easy one," but ultimately the right choice for her.

"How honorable the role of Tweede Kamer member may be, this is not my place," Van der Wal wrote. "I have decided to step down. No easy decision, but the right one for me now."

Van der Wal (51) was elected to the Tweede Kamer in the 2023 elections, securing the fifth position on the VVD candidate list. She has held various political roles, including serving as the national chair of the VVD and as a member of the Gelderland provincial government. Van der Wal has now returned her seat to the VVD; a new appointment will be announced.

Before her tenure in the Tweede Kamer, Van der Wal was Minister for Nature and Nitrogen Emissions in Mark Rutte’s fourth cabinet. In that role, she introduced policies aimed at reducing nitrogen emissions, which led to fierce opposition from the agricultural sector. Her policies sparked large-scale protests, with farmers staging demonstrations near her home, some of which escalated into threats and vandalism.

As minister, she engaged directly with protesting farmers, at times addressing them in person. However, tensions remained high, and security concerns grew as demonstrators broke through police barricades and emptied a manure tank near her residence. She later reflected on the period, stating, “I worked extremely hard for two and a half years, fought for these policies, and paid a high personal price. But politics is a tough profession.”

Since joining the Tweede Kamer, Van der Wal primarily focused on defense, war victims, and cultural issues. However, she struggled to find her place in the current political landscape, particularly as the coalition of PVV, VVD, NSC, and BBB reversed much of her nitrogen policy.

Upon the formation of the current cabinet, she chose not to pursue a ministerial position. At the time, she stated, "I think the Tweede Kamer suits me better in this setup. I am more about progress and transitions." However, as policy directions shifted, she increasingly found herself at odds with the new government’s approach.

Van der Wal will transfer her responsibilities in the coming weeks. "I want to thank all my colleagues for the great collaboration. I will miss you all, though I will remain closely involved with the party," she said in her resignation statement.

VVD leader Dilan Yesilgöz expressed gratitude for Van der Wal’s contributions, writing on X, "Thank you for everything you have done and meant for us over the years."
