PSV pick up much needed win against Heerenveen; Utrecht make it two in a row
PSV Eindhoven picked up a much needed win on Saturday against SC Heerenveen. Ismail Saibari and Guus Til scored to give Peter Bosz’s side something to smile about after losing 1-7 to Arsenal in midweek.
The home team had tested Heerenveen keeper Andries Noppert on several occasions before they scored in the 40th minute to take the lead. Oliver Boscagli found Guus Til with a chip over the defence and he then crossed it for his midfield partner, Ismael Saibari to extend it into the goal.
Til followed up the assist with the second goal in the 57th minute. The 27-year-old controlled the ball in the box before spinning and hitting it hard and low into the far corner with his weaker foot.
PSV had missed several significant chances in the first half and it almost came back to bite them when Heerenveen got a goal back in the 72nd minute. Levi Smans nutmegged Boscagli which then gave him the space to run on and hit it low into the corner.
However, Heerenveen did not trouble Walter Benitez in the PSV goal during the rest of the match. The win changed nothing for the Eindhovenaren in the league table considering league leaders’ Ajax’s also won against PEC Zwolle, this means that Ajax are still eight points clear at the top of the table.
FC Utrecht seem to be clawing themselves out of a run of poor form. Ron Jans’ side beat Willem II 2-3 due to a late goal from Adrien Blake to make it two wins out of two.
Sebastian Haller got his first goal since returning to the club to level the match in Tilburg after Boris Lambert had scored to give Willem II the lead. Noah Ohio then scored with 15 minutes left before Rúnar Þór Sigurgeirsson and Adrien Blake’s goals decided the final score.
There were a few changes to the Eredivisie table after the weekend. Sem Steijn’s winner against Almere City resulted in Twente climbing up to fourth over Feyenoord, who have a game in hand. Steijn’s goal was his 20th of the season, making him the first midfielder to score 20 goals in a season since Jari Litmanen in 1994.
Sparta Rotterdam’s 1-1 draw against NAC on Friday meant that the Rotterdammers are now out of the relegation play off spot. The draw catapulted them over Willem II on goal difference.
