Number of match-fixing reports doubled in 2024 compared to the previous year
The number of reports regarding suspected match-fixing doubled in the last year. The Netherlands Gambling Authority registered 13 reports in 2024, compared to six reports in 2023. The regulator thinks that the increase may be due to more awareness being brought to the obligation to report these crimes to the Financial Intelligence Unit. There was also an increase in match-fixing reports globally.
The Netherlands Gambling Authority has said that reports of match-fixing often come when they see unusual betting patterns, risky matches, and unusual changes in betting odds.
Eight different gambling license holders reported possible match-fixing last year. Four gambling providers did not have their risk analysis systems in order and were issued a warning by The Netherlands Gambling Authority due to this.
According to Casinonieuws, ten of the 13 reports were related to bets on Tennis. The other reports came from Football and Basketball bets. It was not reported whether the incidents were related to matches played in Dutch leagues or abroad.
No reports came in regarding athletes betting on matches in the league they play in in 2024. Something that was the case in 2023.
