Increase in car break-ins last year; over 1,000 reported cases in Noord-Holland

There were 698 more car break-ins throughout the Netherlands last year than in 2023. The biggest increase was in Noord-Holland, where there was an increase of 14.4 percent in car break-ins compared to the previous year. A total of 44,225 car break-ins were reported in the Netherlands last year, with 1,499 of those occurring in Noord-Holland. This was reported by Independer after they researched the matter.

The number of car break-ins has risen by 14.45 percent in the last three years nationally. In Noord-Holland, the number increased by 35.1 percent during that time, the comparison site calculated.

There were also significant increases in Zuid-Holland (+331) and Utrecht (+329). Noord-Brabant saw a decrease of 938 when it comes to the number of break-ins of cars. This number also dropped in Limburg, with 303 fewer cases.

Independer reported that residents living in the provinces of Utrecht and Noord-Holland are most at risk of having their cars broken into. Relatively, most break-ins happen in Utrecht.

The number of car break-ins per household was almost 2.5 times higher there than in the rest of the country. The other cities in the top 5 for most affected regarding this are Eindhoven, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Ouder-Amstel. Bloemendaal had the sixth most cases.

Independer reported that they used data from the police and Statistics Netherlands to produce these numbers.
