Swan causes traffic chaos on Dutch highway

“At first we thought it was an early carnival reveler,” the public works department Rijkswaterstaat said about a swan that caused traffic chaos on the A2 highway near the Empel junction on Monday morning.

The bird wandered onto the highway, leaving quite a traffic jam in its wake. Using a jacket, employees of the Rijkswaterstaat managed to usher it off the road and onto the emergency lane.

The Rijkswaterstaat workers hung out with the swan on the side of the highway until an animal ambulance came to collect the animal. It is unclear whether it was injured.

The swan’s antics led to around 15 minutes of delays for road users. Traffic returned to normal soon afterward.
