Man convicted in slaying of Dutch Marechaussee on Curaçao gets 15 years
Amon F. was convicted on appeal Tuesday for his role in the murder of Dutch marechaussee Toon Brood. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Brood was murdered on May 31, 2024, during a home invasion in Willemstad. Robbers broke into the family home. They ransacked the house and shot Brood while his wife and young children were present. Brood’s widow said the intruders acted violently despite the presence of the children.
In the other trial, F. was sentenced to 26 years in prison after being convicted of both Brood’s murder and a separate killing. The acquittal reduced his sentence from 26 years to 15 years.
Prosecutors had also accused F. of shooting and killing a 25-year-old man nine months before Brood’s death. The shooting stemmed from a dispute over a shipment of vapes. The appeals court ruled there was insufficient evidence for a conviction in that case.
F. appealed the original 26-year sentence. He argued it was too severe. He also asked to be tried under juvenile law because he was 19 years old at the time of Brood’s murder. The court rejected both requests.
Three other men were convicted for their roles in Brood’s murder. Aivano M. received 18 years in prison after the court found he shot Brood inside the home. Claverzjion N. was sentenced to 16 years in prison for his involvement. Glennson Z., the driver of the getaway car, received a 30-month sentence. Six months were suspended with one year of probation.
