Cold week ahead for Netherlands; Snow in the north on Tuesday
Due to the supply of cold air from the east, the average temperature will drop this week. According to the weather service Weeronline, maximums will climb no higher than 5 degrees on average and there is a chance of night frost in some places. Snow may also fall if it remains cold enough. The KNMI issued a code yellow warning for snow in the northern provinces on Tuesday.
“There is quite a bit of uncertainty in the forecast,” said Weeronline, which also takes slightly milder conditions into account. Monday will see maximums of 4 or 5 degrees, but the perceived temperatures will be even colder due to a “clearly present east to northeast wind.” The day will be mainly cloudy and there is also a chance of rain around noon.
The chance of wintry precipitation is the greatest on the night from Monday to Tuesday with an average temperature of 1 degree. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the mercury will drop even more, and, with occasional showers, it could be an average of 2 to 5 degrees.
The KNMI has issued a code yellow for Tuesday morning due to slippery conditions caused by snow. The warning applies to the provinces of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, and Overijssel. “There is a risk of accidents due to slippery roads, cycle paths, and footpaths,” according to the meteorological institute.
According to the KNMI, snow will start falling in the northern provinces on Tuesday morning. They could get between 1 and 3 centimeters of snow cover, “possibly a few centimeters more,” the KNMI said.
From Thursday onwards, the weather will clear up and there will be room for the sun in most places. The wind, which did its work the days before, will also weaken considerably.”
