Dutch driver had become unwell behind the wheel before causing fatal crash in Düsseldorf

The Dutch driver of the car that caused a fatal accident in Düsseldorf last Saturday had become unwell behind the wheel. The German police confirmed suspicions on Wednesday that the accident happened because of an “internal medical emergency.” This is the reason that there will be no criminal investigation into the incident.

An accident at a traffic square in Dusseldorf resulted in three of the four Dutch citizens in the car losing their lives, including the 60-year-old driver. The fourth person’s condition is unchanged. The person is severely injured, German police said.

The BMW that the victims were sitting in went past the node Nordfrierhof too fast and flipped over several times after the driver had become unwell.

Media outlets in Gelderland reported that the victims were from Groenlo and Lichtenvoorde and were in Düsseldorf for a work retreat. A woman who was cycling at the time and a man waiting by a bus stop were also seriously injured as a result of the accident. The cyclist was checked out of the hospital on the same day as the accident.

The man who was waiting at the bus stop was hit by a flying car part and is still in the hospital.
