Young people are delaying their life plans due to their search for a home

More than half of young people who do not have their own place to live yet feel limited in freedom and social development because of this. The young people who do live away from their family home have said that they feel stress and mental issues because they pay a lot of money on rent. This has come forth from research into youth housing conducted by State of Youth NL, which is an initiative by KidsRights.

State of Youth NL researched almost 3,000 young people between the ages of 12 and 19. Of these, 62 percent said that they still live with their parents, carers, or family members. More than half of the people asked are looking for a home.

According State of Youth NL, four in ten young people who are looking for a rental or purchased home stated that they have had to delay or adapt their life plans. These plans include things like living together or having children.

"The results of this research require an action plan for housing young people across the board," said KidsRights chairman Marc Dullaert. “Now that we find out that young people are delaying their life’s plans for this then the future of the Netherlands is locked. It is unacceptable to let this happen. That is why the politicians have to prioritize the housing for young people.”
