Schiphol warns of flight delays, cancellations amid snowy weather

Schiphol Airport is facing significant disruptions on Sunday due to winter weather conditions, with numerous flight cancellations and delays expected. The airport is advising travelers to closely monitor up-to-date flight information.

A Schiphol spokesperson confirmed that about 70 flights have been removed from the schedule, primarily affecting flights to European destinations. The spokesperson further warned that a "messy day", full of disruptions.

Snowplows began clearing runways early Sunday morning. However, runway operations remain limited at the moment, and the spokesperson noted that full operations are not expected to resume until early afternoon.

Sunday's weather issues coincide with the final day of the Christmas holiday period, traditionally a busy time for the airport. However, the spokesperson stated that passenger traffic at Schiphol remains "manageable" and emphasized that the airport is still accessible due to the ongoing preparations.

Road accidents

Winter weather has caused several road accidents across the Netherlands. In Harderwijk, a small truck slid on icy roads and flipped over. Emergency crews responded, but both occupants of the truck were unharmed, local sources reported.

In Gelderland, authorities ordered additional rounds of salting as hazardous road conditions persisted in several areas. A driver in Maassluis lost control of their vehicle on the A20, causing the car to spin and hit a guardrail. The driver was checked by paramedics but did not require hospitalization.

Near Roosendaal, a truck carrying sugar beets overturned on the A17, spilling the beets onto the road. While officials have not confirmed whether the icy conditions caused the accident, the highway was closed in both directions.
