Code Yellow warning extended for icy roads and snowfall across the Netherlands

The KNMI has extended a Code Yellow warning for several provinces in the Netherlands due to icy roads and expected snowfall. The warning applies to Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, Gelderland, and parts of Flevoland. Freezing conditions and snow are forecast to disrupt travel through Saturday and Sunday morning.

On Saturday morning, freezing conditions affected roads in Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, and parts of Flevoland. The KNMI reported that icy patches were caused by wet roads freezing overnight. The warning is expected to remain in place in these provinces until late morning, with conditions in Groningen improving around 11:00.

Snow is expected to move into the northern and central provinces overnight into Sunday. Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, and Gelderland are forecast to receive 1 to 3 centimeters of snow, while a wider band stretching across central regions may see accumulations of 3 to 5 centimeters.

Advice from the KNMI

The snow is likely to cause slick roads and poor visibility, leading to significant disruptions for road traffic. Drivers in the affected provinces are advised to reduce speed, increase following distances, and check travel updates before departure.

By Sunday afternoon, the snow is expected to turn to rain, starting in the southwest and gradually moving northeast. This shift will bring relief from icy conditions, with temperatures expected to rise above freezing later in the day.

Residents are urged to monitor weather updates and adhere to safety measures while traveling in affected areas.
