Explosions in the Netherlands double from previous year; Rotterdam tops list

The number of explosions in the Netherlands surged dramatically in 2024, with at least 877 incidents recorded compared to 380 in 2023, according to a press release by ANP. This marks a sharp increase in monthly averages, from 32 explosions per month last year to 73 this year.

Explosions were reported in 138 municipalities across the country. Rotterdam saw the most incidents, with 113 explosions, followed by Amsterdam with 110 and The Hague with 70. Other cities such as Den Bosch (32), Almere (28), Utrecht (26), and Vlaardingen (21) also reported high numbers of incidents.

Criminal activity was not confined to major cities. Fifteen percent of the explosions occurred in smaller municipalities and rural areas, including Lelystad, Oss, and Oldambt.

In October alone, 120 explosions occurred, the highest number ever recorded in a single month since the ANP began tracking such incidents. Police attribute many of the explosions to the use of heavy, professional-grade fireworks, often loaded with flash powder. This material, found in devices such as cobra fireworks, is known for its destructive potential.

Repeat explosions on the rise

In 2024, 92 streets experienced multiple explosions, compared to 36 streets the previous year. Examples include Greta Hofstralaan in Vlaardingen, where four explosions targeted a house formerly occupied by a deceased plumber, and De Botter in Lelystad, which also saw four incidents.

While many explosions are linked to criminal activity, police estimate that more than half stem from personal disputes. A fatal explosion in early December on Tarwekamp in The Hague, for instance, is believed to be connected to a broken relationship, according to reports by Algemeen Dagblad.

The ANP’s tally includes only incidents where explosives were detonated, excluding attempted explosions, ATM bombings, and the discovery of unexploded devices. This focus aims to highlight the incidents with the greatest impact on communities. The data includes details such as location, date, and type of site targeted. Media reports and police announcements served as the primary sources, though the true number of incidents may be higher.

In November, police released a separate report estimating over 1,000 explosions in 2024, which also factored in unsuccessful attempts and discovered explosives.
