Police seized record amount of illegal fireworks ahead of Christmas

In the week leading up to Christmas, Dutch police seized 13,124 kilograms of illegal fireworks, according to the Public Prosecution Service's fireworks barometer. This marked a significant increase over the 4,746 kilograms intercepted during the same period last year.

The 13,124-kilogram seizure is the second-largest amount of illegal fireworks confiscated this year, just behind the 13,676 kilograms seized during the week of February 19.

As of December 16, a total of 93,741 kilograms of prohibited fireworks had been seized in 2024, surpassing the total confiscated in all of 2023, which amounted to 78,895 kilograms.

Authorities have indicated that additional data on illegal fireworks seizures from the final week of the year will be released later this week.
