Dutch defense minister condemns Russian Christmas bombings in Ukraine, reaffirms support
Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans condemned Russia’s latest airstrikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, calling the attacks a grim reminder of the importance of unwavering support for Ukraine.
"Even during the festival of light, Russia chooses to bring mass darkness to Ukraine," Brekelmans said in a post on X. "It is yet another stark reminder of why Ukraine deserves our unwavering support."
On Christmas morning, Russia launched widespread airstrikes targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko confirmed the attacks, stating that the transmission system operator was taking emergency measures to mitigate the damage. "As soon as the security situation allows, energy workers will assess and address the damage," Galushchenko said.
According to Ukrainian officials, the strikes included Kalibr cruise missiles launched from the Black Sea and ballistic missiles. The attacks caused significant damage to Ukraine's power grid, further straining critical infrastructure in the middle of winter.
Brekelmans emphasized that Russia’s strategy of targeting civilian infrastructure is designed to cripple Ukraine’s economy and defense while breaking the morale of its citizens. "These relentless bombings highlight the urgency of maintaining our support for Ukraine," Brekelmans said.
The Netherlands has been a steadfast ally of Ukraine since the onset of the Russian invasion in February 2022. The Dutch government has provided military aid, humanitarian assistance, and diplomatic support, reaffirming its commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The ongoing strikes have left millions of Ukrainians without consistent access to electricity, heating, and water, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
“Russia’s actions remind us why we must remain resolute in our support for Ukraine,” Brekelmans wrote.
