Another four suspects in Amsterdam violence remanded into custody; Eight detained total

Another three suspects of involvement in the riots surrounding the Ajax vs. Maccabi Tel Aviv match in Amsterdam last week were arraigned on Thursday and remanded into custody. As was a man suspected of involvement in riots on Plein ‘40-’45 on Monday, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) reported. That brings the total number of arraigned and detained suspects in the Amsterdam unrest to eight.

On Monday, the Amsterdam police announced that they had arrested five suspects in connection with the riots in Amsterdam around the football match over the weekend. Three of those suspects were brought before the examining magistrate on Thursday on suspicion of incitement or public violence.

The suspects are two 26-year-old men, one from Amsterdam and one from Utrecht, suspected of making inciting posts on social media, and a 37-year-old man from Amsterdam suspected of pulling a man off his bicycle. The magistrate remanded them into custody for another 14 days.

The other two men arrested over the weekend, aged 19 and 21, have been released from custody, but they are still suspects in this case.

The magistrate also arraigned a 21-year-old man from Almelo and remanded him into custody for two weeks. He was arrested during a riot on Plein ‘40-’45 on Monday after the police saw him pulling a passing cyclist off his bicycle and assaulting him.

There were many violent incidents in Amsterdam around the Ajax-Maccabi Tel Aviv match on Thursday, November 8. Israelis were chased and assaulted by small groups of rioters in various places in the city. Anti-Semitic insults can be heard in videos of the incidents. There is also footage of Maccabi supporters instigating violence against Amsterdam locals.

The following days were also filled with unrest, including banned protests on Dam Square on Sunday and Wednesday, and a riot in Amsterdam Nieuw-West on Plein ‘40-’45 on Monday.

Early this week, the court arraigned four suspects - two minors and two adults - who were arrested for violence in Amsterdam on Thursday 8, and Friday 8 November. That brings the total of suspects arraigned and in custody to eight.

The police arrested another suspect on Thursday who hasn’t been arraigned yet. The man turned himself in after the police shared a blurred photo of him on the investigation program Opsporing Verzocht on Tuesday. He is suspected of public violence during the riots around the football match.

The police shared blurred photos of four other men, too. They have until this evening to turn themselves in or the police will publish recognizable photos of them.
