Jumbo salad recalled due to possible Salmonella contamination

Jumbo, a leading supermarket chain in the Netherlands, has issued an urgent recall for its Mango Curry Salad due to potential contamination with the Salmonella bacterium. The affected product, identified as Jumbo Salade Mango Curry with an expiration date of Dec. 5, 2024, has been pulled from store shelves across the country.

In a statement, Jumbo advised customers to not eat the salad and to return it to any store location for a full refund, even without a purchase receipt. "Consuming this product may pose health risks, especially to high-risk groups," the statement said. The high-risk group includes children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems.

Salmonella, which is one of the four major global causes of diarrheal diseases, is a widespread bacterial infection affecting millions of people worldwide each year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), symptoms of salmonellosis typically include fever, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, usually beginning 6 to 72 hours after ingestion and lasting 2 to 7 days.

The WHO further explains that although many salmonella infections are self-limiting, some cases require medical intervention. “Salmonellosis can be life-threatening, depending on host factors and the serotype of Salmonella,” the organization notes. The bacteria can survive for weeks in dry environments and even longer in water, making it highly resistant and capable of spreading far.

Jumbo advises customers to identify the recalled Mango Curry Salad by checking for the EAN code 8718452757770 and the expiration date of Dec. 5, 2024. For more details, customers can contact Jumbo’s customer service at 0800 - 0220 161 or visit their website at Jumbo.com.
