Public transport and cars too expensive for Dutch households with average income: Nibud

Traveling with public transport or car is too expensive for families and couples with an average income, according to a study by the National Institute for Budget Information (Nibud) commissioned by the Mobility Alliance. If these families and couples don’t cut back on other items, they fall short between 200 and 900 euros per month for mobility.

The price of transport has increased by almost 30 percent between 2015 and 2023. “That increase is slightly higher than the inflation of 26 percent,” said the Mobility Alliance, which includes ANWB, NS, BOVAG, and Bouwend Nederland.

“It was already known that 10 percent of the Dutch population, often households with lower incomes, experience major problems getting from A to B. This research shows that this group is much larger.”

According to the alliance, the situation not only has adverse consequences for the security of existence, health, and freedom to travel. “It also affects the social fabric of our society.”
