Criminal report made about vlogger after incident of homophobia in tram
Police have received a report about the incident in a tram in The Hague in which a man was a victim of homophobia by a blogger. The incident received a lot of attention nationwide in the last few days. A fellow passenger stood up for the victim.
A police spokesperson reported on Wednesday that they received a report about the insult on Monday afternoon. Due to privacy regulations, the spokesperson could not say who sent the report. Various witnesses also reported the crime after the initial report. The spokesperson does not know whether those reports were made before or after the incident received national attention.
The case is regarding a vlogger who filmed a man with nail polish on his toes in an HTM tram while making homophobic comments. A fellow passenger subsequently stood up for the victim. The vlogger posted the video of the incident online.
Police are taking these types of cases very seriously, said the spokesperson. “We are working on the case,” she added. No arrests have been made as of yet. The AD reported on Wednesday that the vlogger has been causing unrest for a while in The Hague and has often threatened and insulted people and made videos of it. The police spokesperson said these signals will also be taken into account.
The spokesperson also emphasized that people should always report these types of incidents. “So that we can arrest them. And if it is ongoing, call 112 so that we can arrest them instantly.”
HTM is investigating what they can do with it, said a spokesperson for the transport company. “We are limited in the possibilities of preventing this type of thing. We cannot prevent people from misbehaving.”
Yet HTM still wants to investigate ways to prevent this type of misbehavior from happening in the future. “We transport 300,000 people a day. We cannot keep an eye on everybody, so we need to look at what we can do.”
She added that giving the vlogger a travel ban will not work. “You need to be able to police that,” she said. The Hague has an open system, she explained. This means that people can get off or on trams at any time. “That makes it very hard to police.”
