Online supermarket Picnic books first profit in Netherlands
Picnic saw significant growth in the Netherlands and abroad last year, the online supermarket said in its annual report, published on Monday. The company booked its first-ever profit in the Netherlands at the end of 2023, though the group as a whole still suffered a loss, Financieele Dagblad reported.
The company did not disclose how much profit it made in the Netherlands. It did say the profit was mainly due to the robotized distribution in Utrecht, which allows Picnic to work more efficiently.
Picnic’s turnover rose by over a third to 1.2 billion euros in 2023. It still suffered a net loss of over 220 million euros, compared to a loss of 209 million euros in 2022.
The Netherlands accounted for almost 800 million euros of the revenue, 28 percent more than in 2022. The online supermarket also grew significantly in Germany (+41 percent) and France (+147 percent).
Picnic served around 2.3 million customers last year, up 30 percent from the year before, and was active in 450 cities. The company’s range increased from 873 to 1,600 products.
