Feyenoord score five; Fortuna Sittard and Groningen win again
Feyenoord bounced back from their disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Willem II last weekend by beating PEC Zwolle 5-1 away. Goals from Igor Paixao, Calvin Stengs, David Hancko, and two from Santiago Gimenez gave Brian Priske his first league win as Feyenoord manager.
The Rotterdammers made the perfect start, going ahead after four minutes played. The new signing, Hugo Bueno, made an instant impact in a Feyenoord shirt by putting in a terrific cross for Igor Paixao to head home from close range.
PEC had gotten more into the game at the end of the first half, hitting the crossbar with a long shot from Elliot Reijnders. Despite this, Feyenoord came out the second half stronger and scored within two minutes. It was a beautifully placed goal by Calvin Stengs after Igor Paixao had played him in outside the 16-yard box.
Feyenoord made it 0-3 a few minutes later. A free kick was slid home by defender David Hancko. The goal was initially ruled offside, but after a VAR review, the decision was reversed.
Poor build-up play from Zwolle resulted in Feyenoord getting their fourth. Gjivai Zechiël won the ball, and it fell to Santiago Gimenez, who volleyed it into the net from inside the box.
Gimenez got his second and Feyenoord’s fourth goal in the 71st minute. A brilliant pass by Stengs found the Mexican in a ton of space, and he used the inside of his foot to place it past Jasper Schendelaar in the Zwolle goal.
Yet the best goal of the match came from Zwolle. Filip Krastev scored a consolation for the home side with a sublime volley from outside the area.
PEC has had a terrible start to the season and is bottom of the league with six goals conceded and one scored.
Two teams that have made a great start to the season are Fortuna Sittard and FC Groningen. Both sides have won both of their first two games; They are the only teams to do so, with the exception of PSV and AZ.
FC Groningen followed up their 4-1 win against NAC Breda last weekend with a 2-1 win away at RKC Waalwijk. Jorg Schreuders had given Groningen the lead before Thom van Bergen doubled it. A late goal from Richard van der Venne proved to be only a consolation.
Fortuna Sittard followed up their 2-0 win away at Go Ahead Eagles with a convincing 3-0 win against Almere City on Friday night. Allen Halilovic, Kristoffer Peterson, and Josip Mitrovic got the goals for Danny Buijs’s side, who have also yet to concede this season.
