Diemen annoyed at Amsterdam over road works traffic
The municipality of Diemen is angry about the large amount of traffic in the town due to the construction on the motorway A10 and the IJburglaan in Amsterdam. According to the municipality, Diemen is experiencing a "traffic jam," which is causing a lot of inconvenience. Diemen wants Amsterdam to take measures.
"The current situation is resulting in a lot of traffic and delays on almost every road in Diemen. This causes considerable inconvenience to our residents and can lead to unacceptable risks for the emergency services, for example," the municipality said. "No coordination or consultation took place about the combination of the construction."
Diemen said that they cannot limit the amount of cut-through traffic and have confronted the municipality of Amsterdam about the problems. "Pending adjustments, we ask road users to move through Diemen calmly and with some understanding of the situation," said a statement.
A spokesperson for the Amsterdam traffic alderwoman, Melanie van der Horst, said there were regional discussions about the road works. "That does not take anything away from the fact that this can lead to annoying situations. We will discuss this with the municipality of Diemen and the Rijkswaterstaat to see how we can limit the nuisance as much as possible for the time being."
The municipality of Diemen was not available for comment on Tuesday night.
