Municipal elections: GroenLinks and PvdA for joint Amsterdam faction as of 2026

GroenLinks (GL) and the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA) in Amsterdam want to continue working together in a faction in the city council after the 2026 municipal elections. In a digital survey, the members of both parties "expressed their enthusiasm for far-reaching cooperation by a large majority," according to the Amsterdam PvdA. The final decision will follow in September via a referendum.

In the poll, members were able to choose from several collaborations. GroenLinks members voted most often for taking part in the elections with separate party programs and candidate lists and then continuing together. PvdA members voted more often for full cooperation from the start of the elections, with the same program and candidate list.

In the Amsterdam PvdA, 33.57 percent of voting members voted in favor. For GroenLinks, this percentage was even lower at 27.88 percent.

In order to "do justice to the wishes of both parties," members can vote for or against GroenLinks in the referendum in September. Given the result of the vote, it is almost certain that the parties will merge into a single parliamentary group in the capital. "A form of cooperation in which we complement each other and work together for a green and social Amsterdam," says the PvdA.

On Wednesday, party leaders Imane Nadif (GroenLinks) and Fatihya Abdi (PvdA) did not want to say whether they wanted both parties to enter the elections together in Amsterdam. "That is really up to the members," they told Amsterdam broadcaster AT5.

GroenLinks and PvdA already form joint factions in the provinces of Zuid-Holland and Zeeland and municipalities such as Veldhoven, Vught, Voorst, Best, Halderberge, Leusden, Ridderkerk, Rijssen-Holten, Land van Cuijk, De Ronde Venen, Goes, Veere, Woudenberg, and Bergeijk.
