Voters not impressed by GL-PvdA's new name, PRO

GroenLinks-PvdA’s new name, Progressief Nederland (PRO), can count on little enthusiasm from voters, Hart van Nederland reported after surveying its opinion panel. The party itself is very happy with the name, but even its own voters are divided on the issue.

Of the people who voted for GroenLinks-PvdA in the previous elections, only 41 percent consider the name for the new merged party a good choice. 44 percent called it an unsuitable name. The rest have no opinion on the matter. Still, 64 percent say that the name fits what the party stands for.

Looking at all Dutch voters, only 19 percent consider PRO a good name, while 51 percent find it a bad choice. Only 29 percent think the name suits the party.

According to Hart van Nederland, the word “progressief,” which translates to progressive in English, is an issue for many people. 36 percent of voters said that the word does not appeal to them at all.

Another 26 percent said the name says too little about the party. And 20 percent feel that PRO is missing something “social.”

Many voters said they’d have trouble recognizing the new name. Some said that they’ll miss the old names or find the new one too vague and not distinctive enough.
