Concerned parents still contacting the Donor Child Foundation after Netflix documentary
Stichting Donorkind, translated to the Donor Child Foundation in English, receives two or three reports daily from parents who are worried after seeing the Netflix documentary 'The Man with 1000 Kids' chair Ties van der Meer confirmed after a report made by RTL Nieuws. The Dutch' mass donor' Jonathan is shown in the film.
Jonathan conceived over a hundred children by donating his sperm. The exact number of children he conceived is unclear. Around 20 people reported to Stichting Donorkind in the first few days after the documentary launch. Still, the number of people reporting to the foundation "continues to rise," said Van der Meer.
Parents are wondering whether Jonathan or a different mass donor is the father of their child. "Or they now find out that the internet donor turns out to be a mass donor."
The foundation can advise parents on what to do if they have doubts. "You can do a DNA test to rule something out." Support groups for parents that have children of a mass donor are also going to be started in September.
Jonathan was in court last year, where it was ruled that he had to stop donating his sperm. Stitching Donorkind filed the case. The foundation said that mass donations are important for the child's health and harmful to their wellbeing. For example, donor children can unknowingly have a child later in life with someone who is genetically their half-sibling, which can also be harmful to their offspring.
According to the court, Jonathan lied about his sperm donations. He told people who wanted to use his donation that he had a maximum of 25 donor children, which is the maximum amount that individual clinics use from a single sperm donor.
Ties van der Meer also said that parents are contacting the foundation because they recognize other donors in the documentary, such as a donor named Leon.
