Heavy rainfall predicted for Tuesday; Flooding possible in the southeast
A weather pattern that was predicted to move across the Netherlands on Tuesday will bring intense rainfall, and possibly lightning, hail and strong wind. There may be more than 50 millimeters of precipitation locally, which is nearly as much rainfall as the average for the entire month of June.
The heaviest periods of rain are expected in the southeast of the Netherlands, with localized flooding a possibility, cautioned Weeronline. The weather website said this could bring high water levels in local rivers, and will likely cause a particularly busy evening rush hour.
In the end, Tuesday will be soaking wet with heavy rains on a wide scale. The rain will move slowly in a northeasterly direction over the Netherlands, with most of the rain dumping over the southeast.
Local flooding is certainly a risk in the Limburg hill country, according to Weeronline. The website advised water authorites in Limburg, but also elsewhere in the country, to prepare in advance by lowering water levels ahead of the storm.
“Especially in the provinces of Utrecht, Gelderland, Noord-Brabant and Limburg, it can really continue to rain.” The south of Limburg also has a chance of heavy thunderstorms with possible hail and heavy gusts of wind on Tuesday evening.
Since June has already been very soggy, the wet soil cannot absorb the heavy rain, and it ends up directly in ditches. “Local rivers are certain to rise this week due to heavy showers.” This especially applies to small rivers in the Netherlands and Germany.
Because it is dry in the Alps, the water level of the Rhine is still falling after its high water point earlier this month. Some heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected on Thursday and Friday, at which point it will become drier.
