ANWB aid worker on site to help injured Dutch people after terrace collapse in Mallorca
The aid worker who left the ANWB emergency center in Barcelona has arrived in Mallorca. A spokesperson for the ANWB emergency center said on Sunday that he will begin supporting the Dutch people on the island who were injured by the collapse of the beach club.
According to Trouw, the ANWB emergency center has so far treated eight Dutch people injured in the terrace collapse near the island's capital. When there are eight or more victims, the ANWB's disaster protocol comes into effect, and therefore, the center sends an aid worker to Mallorca. A spokeswoman told Trouw that the incident is now officially a disaster, so the ANWB center is now acting as a coordinating body.
"These eight people in Mallorca need our help," the spokeswoman said. She told the Dutch newspaper that the Dutch victims all had injuries but did not want to say anything about the nature and severity of them for privacy reasons.
The aid worker is currently in contact with ten affected Dutch nationals and will also support family members. On Sunday afternoon, he will go to the hospital to talk to the injured Dutch. "He will see what help is needed," said the spokeswoman. Their medical service also checks if and when the injured can fly back to the Netherlands.
According to the AD, a 28-year-old Dutchman suffered a serious head injury. The man needs at least two operations and cannot leave the country for the time being, said Frank Faessen, who is speaking on behalf of the relatives. When the terrace collapsed unexpectedly last Thursday, the 28-year-old "took quite a blow and ended up in a nasty position," Faessen told the newspaper.
At least four people were killed when a packed terrace on the upper floor of the Medusa Beach Club collapsed and came crashing down onto the crowded terrace on the ground floor last week. Those killed include a 23-year-old woman from Spain, a 44-year-old man from Senegal, and two women from Germany aged 20 and 30, police said.On Instagram, the restaurant posted that "they are in shock." The venue offers its condolences to the families of the victims and also says that "they will cooperate with the authorities" to find out what happened.
