Two detained in Amsterdam defense attorney's slaying

Police detained two persons of interest connected to the murder of criminal defense attorney Derk Wiersum. The arrests were announced on television show Opsporing Verzocht on Tuesday night.

The duo were taken into custody for their possible roles in fencing a stolen vehicle allegedly used to monitor Wiersum shortly before he was killed. They were questioned and released, police said.

The attorney and father of two was shot dead in September while standing in front of his Amsterdam-Buitenveldert home with his wife. One person was previously arrested in the case about the same time police discovered a white Opel Combo found in Almere that was used as the getaway car.

He was representing Nabil B. at the time, a crown witness in the so-called Marengo Trials. The legal process involves 16 suspects in a string of homicides, assassination attempts, and murder plots.

The police asked for the public's help a week ago to identify people linked to the three stolen vehicles, including a Volkswagen Transporter and a Renault Megane. Authorities received 37 tips after the show was aired.
