"At the time of the shooting incident many people were present at Hugo de Grootplein," Amsterdam police stated. "Thus the detectives are urgently looking for witnesses who have seen or heard something, or who have [photos or videos]."
A short time later, police said, "The suspected escape vehicle was spotted on the Admiraal de Ruijterweg and stopped by police. Officers fired a warning shot and arrested one suspect."
ideo from the scene showed a heavy police presence on Admiraal de Ruijterweg near the intersection with Van Gentstraat. That location is just shy of 2.5 kilometers away from the crime scene.
The information about the arrest was revealed at 4:20 p.m., about 30 minutes after authorities asked people to be on the lookout for the getaway car, possibly a gray Volkswagen with Belgian license plates.
A trauma team was dispatched by helicopter minutes after the shooting, along with at least four ambulances and an additional paramedics team. There were reports from the scene of one victim needing resuscitation efforts at a restaurant on the square, but it was not immediately clear if it was a result of the shooting, or if this was the victim pronounced dead at the scene.
