Childminders again arrested for Brunssum baby's death

Two childminders from Brunssum were again arrested for the death of a 5-month-old baby that was in their care in October 2017. Their arrests were prompted by the final report on the cause of the baby's death, the Public Prosecution Service said to 1Limburg.

"We are still studying [the report], but it gave us enough reason to arrest both people again", a Public Prosecution spokesperson said to 1Limburg. He would not say what the report contained.

The baby boy died on October 11th, 2017. He became unwell while at the home of the two childminders. They did not immediately call emergency services, but first tried to resuscitate him themselves. The child later died in a hospital in Maastricht.

Investigation by the Netherlands Forensic Institute showed that the boy died of 'shaken baby syndrome'. There were also signs that the baby had been abused, according to NOS.

The 34-year-old man and 32-year-old woman were first arrested a week after the baby's death, but were released from custody at the end of November 2017. The Prosecutor then explicitly stated that they are still suspected of manslaughter or abuse resulting in death.
