Man arrested in random fatal stabbing of Groningen jogger
A 26-year-old man already in police custody for vandalism was arrested on Monday in connection with the seemingly random fatal stabbing of a runner in Groningen. The suspect, also from Groningen, was being held for the murder as of 1:15 p.m.
Hidde Bergman, 27, was killed at about 7:15 p.m. on the Jaagpag on May 14. A week later, police released a sketch of the man they suspected of the crime, describing him as being 20 to 30 years of age, and between 1.7 and 1.8 meters in height. About 45 percent of the 176 tips police received from the public were called in after the sketch was released.
Rumors of Bergman being a random victim prompted officials to warn those who work, live, and study in the area to be extremely cautious.
