Bus crashes into lamppost after passenger attacks driver

A bus hit a lamppost on Stadshoudersweg in Rotterdam on Wednesday after one of the passengers assaulted the bus driver. It is still unclear why the man attacked the woman driving the bus, the police said. She did not sustain serious injuries. None of the passengers were hurt, RTL Nieuws reports.

According to Rotterdam public transit service RET, the man attacked the driver after he asked her question. "She answered his question and got a slap in the face and a punch in the stomach", a spokesperson said to the broadcaster. "She was so shocked that she hit a lamppost."

Other passengers managed to keep the man under control until the police arrived. He was arrested and taken to a police station.

The driver is doing well under the circumstances. "She was not seriously injured, but that does not alter the fact that this was a huge shock. This was very bad for her. And unacceptable", the RET spokesperson said to RTL.

The woman will be offered aid and RET will release camera footage to the police to aid them in their investigation.
