Aggressive buzzard attacking joggers in Emmen

The municipality of Emmen is warning residents to be careful of an aggressive buzzard when they go jogging. The bird is nesting along the Oranjekanaal and is attacking joggers that pass too close to its nest.

The municipality put up signs warning people to beware of an "aggressive bird of prey". Joggers are advised to rather take a different route.

According to Dagblad van het Noorden, three people have been attacked by the bird so far. One of the joggers sustained a head wound.

This is not the first time a bird of prey is attacking people in the Netherlands. In 2015 Purmerend was terrorized by an owl. There were also a number of incidents of an owl attacking people in Twello in 2016. And in 2017 buzzards attacked people in Emmen and Meierijstad.

April is breeding season for buzzards and the birds can become very aggressive while protecting their young.
