Two incidents of football supporters shouting racist remarks at players this weekend left Prime Minister Mark Rutte furious. In both cases black players were either called or linked to Zwarte Piet - a blackface character from the Netherlands' Sinterklaas celebration. "It makes you hopeless, doesn't it", Rutte said on Monday, RTL Nieuws reports. "This society cannot go further if we treat each other this way."

With teachers in primary- and secondary education across the Netherlands striking on Wednesday, many a parent will be wondering what to do with their kids on this extra free day. Zoos and amusement parks across the country are there to help, according to a list compiled by newspaper AD.

A number of the larger attractions are opening on Wednesday, even though they're actually already closed or partially closed for the winter. Others are offering discounts.

The municipality of Emmen is warning residents to be careful of an aggressive buzzard when they go jogging. The bird is nesting along the Oranjekanaal and is attacking joggers that pass too close to its nest.

The municipality put up signs warning people to beware of an "aggressive bird of prey". Joggers are advised to rather take a different route.

According to Dagblad van het Noorden, three people have been attacked by the bird so far. One of the joggers sustained a head wound.

Despite public street lighting and illuminated advertising, many Dutch cities are getting darker, according to a study of the 54 largest cities in the Netherlands by Natuur- en  Milieufederaties. The environmental federations call this a "turning point" for light pollution in the country. The Netherlands is one of the most illuminated countries in the world, AD reports.

The police shot a man in the leg in a home on De Haar in Emmen on Wednesday afternoon. According to the police, the suspect was injured, but conscious. He was arrested and taken to a hospital in Groningen under police escort, Dagblad van het Noorden reports.

The police arrived at the apartment with two cars around 3:00 p.m. An hour later local residents heard two shots fired. The police could not tell the newspaper anything about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A 20-year-old woman passed away after being seriously injured in a stabbing in a home on Hoofdstraat in Emmen on Monday morning. A 21-year-old man was arrested as a suspect, the Drenthe police said on Twitter.

The stabbing happened around 5:30 a.m., according to Dagblad van het Noorden. The circumstances surrounding the incident are still unclear.

The police are at the scene, doing forensic investigation in and around the home. 

Both the victim and the suspect are from Emmen.

Six children were injured when a bouncy castle fell over at the Emmerhout shopping center in Emmen on Wednesday afternoon. Five were taken to hospital, the sixth was treated at the scene. The age of the injured children and their current condition are unknown, Dagblad van het Noorden reports.

Piet Hein van T., a 66-year-old child psychiatrist from the Friesland village of Makkinga, was caught having sex with a 15-year-old boy in a guesthouse in Katmandu, Nepal on Thursday. He was arrested with five others in a large action against child sex tourism, AD reports.

Child asylum seekers receiving Dutch language lessons in Emmen were face with some horrible pictures during their lessons over the past weeks. Pictures like a Barbie wearing a bomb-belt, and traffic signs changed to show sexual texts were shown during a powerpoint presentation for the Verbal Dutch course by the CED-Groep, Dagblad van het Noorden reports.

Heavy rains caused many problems in large parts of northern Netherlands on Sunday night. On Twitter local residents complained about flooded streets and buildings, and even water streaming out of the toilet.

Drenthe saw a total of 63 millimeters of rain on Sunday evening, RTL Nieuws reports. Usually the whole Netherlands gets 61 millimeters of rain in the entire month of May.

The police found a man wanted for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl on a train between Coevorden and Emmen in February. It turns out the man was already in custody, AD reports.

Earlier this week the police released photos of the man, asking the public to help track him down. But he was already in custody in the center of the country. "We would never have released the images if we had known that", police spokesperson Paul Heidanus said to Dagblad van het Noorden.

A 15-year-old girl was sexually assaulted on a train from Emmen to Coevorden on February 5th. The police released photos of the suspect in the hopes that information from the public can help track him down, AD reports.

The train departed from Emmen at 5:38 p.m. on Monday, February 5th. The girl was sitting in a compartment with several other people when a man came to sit next to her. He tried to kiss her and groped at her, also grabbing her crotch.

Ugbaad Kilincci, the PvdA candidate city councilor who faced various racist remarks while campaigning on Saturday, will have a seat in the Emmen city council. She received 1,007 preference votes in the municipal elections on Wednesday, RTV Drenthe reports.

Geert Wilders and his PVV won city council seats seats in each one of the 30 municipalities the party participated in during the municipal elections on Wednesday. In total the PVV currently stands on 74 seats, the Volkskrant reports.

During the previous municipal elections four years ago, the PVV only participated in two municipalities - Almere and The Hague. The party got fewer seats in those two municipalities this time around. In Almere the party dropped from nine to seven seats, and in The Hague from seven to two seats.

Ugbaad Kilincci, a PvdA candidate councilor in Emmen, was faced with racism while campaigning in the Drenthe town on Saturday. She was called, among other things, a "ragged-head moron", a "black monkey", and told to "go back to Africa", RTL Nieuws reports.

No Surrender

A prosecutor from the Noord-Nederland Public Prosecution Service is in hiding due to serious threats made against her. She is investigating outlaw motorcycle club No Surrender, but it is not clear whether the threats came from the club, the Telegraaf reports.

Almost at the same time as this prosecutor, Emmen mayor Bouke Arends also went into hiding due to threats received after he closed a No Surrender club house. According to the Public Prosecutor, the mayor and prosecutor going into hiding does not necessarily mean that No Surrender is behind the threats.

The cause of a tragic fire that took the lives of six-year-old Antonin Kellner and his five-year-old sister Alice has still not been determined though rumors persist it involved a Christmas tree going up in flames. A fundraising campaign launched by their neighbors in Emmen collected nearly 66 thousand euros for parents David and Jindriska Kellner, as of Tuesday morning.

Two children were killed in a house fire that ignited Saturday morning in Emmen. The victims are a six-year-old boy and his five-year-old sister, a regional police office reported.

Their parents were not seriously injured in the blaze, and were transported to an area hospital for treatment.  Police took charge of the investigation into the incident, a fire department spokesperson told Hart van Nederland. The victims' mother was sedated at the hospital, while the father was kept apprised of the ongoing situation.

No Surrender

Henk Kuipers, the leader of outlaw motorcycle club No Surrender, was arrested in his home in Emmen on Tuesday morning. The 53-year-old man is suspected of assault, extortion, threats, violent theft and forgery. A 59-year-old man from Sneek was also arrested on suspicion of forgery and extortion, the Public Prosecutor announced.

A helicopter pilot was taken to a police station for questioning after he caused a panic at the Retropop music festival on Saturday night with a nose diving stunt. The organizers of the festival called the stunt an "individual and rash action", RTL Nieuws reports.

Festival attendees were watching a performance by Di-rect and Lucas Hamming when the low flying helicopter suddenly started a nose dive right above their heads. The pilot pulled up before reaching the ground and people below, and no one was injured. But many did get quite a fright.

The Dutc Aldermen's Association is calling for harsher action against people who intimidate politicians in the Netherlands following revelations that Emmen's deputy mayor Bouke Arends had to go into hiding abroad due to threats on his life. Threats against politicians are "the order of the day", Jeroen van Gool of the Association said to the Telegraaf.

In 2016 most Dutch municipalities did not have a sufficient number of charging stations, BNR reports.

The police wiretapped the Emmen clubhouse of motorcycle gang No Surrender. Overheard conversations revealed that crimes were structurally committed in the building, including drug trafficking and assaults, Prosecutor Pieter van Rest revealed in a press conference about a raid on the clubhouse on Friday morning, AD reports.

Early on Friday morning a large team of police officers raided the clubhouse of outlaw motorcycle gang No Surrender in Emmen. An emergency decree was issued and fences were placed around the complex. According to the municipality, one person was arrested, AD reports.
