Amstelveen man, 72, arrested for child sex abuse in Nepal
A 72-year-old man from Amstelveen was arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing children in Nepal, the Public Prosecutor announced after the man's arraignment on Tuesday. He was arrested by the Koninklijke Marechaussee last week, when he arrived at Schiphol returning from Nepal.
The man was remanded into custody for two weeks on Tuesday. He is suspected of having, making and importing child- and animal pornography, as well as sexually abusing minors in Nepal. The Dutch authorities received information from that country about the man's involvement in child sex tourism. Terre des Hommes was also monitoring the man in Nepal and tipped off the Dutch police when he came to the Netherlands.
Child pornography was found on the man's phone. A special police team searched his home and confiscated data carriers, which also contained child pornography.
Over the past years, multiple Dutch people were arrested and convicted for abusing young children in Nepal. Last year a 66-year-old child psychiatrist from the Friesland village of Makkinga was arrested after he was caught having sex with a 15-year-old boy in a guesthouse in Katmandu. His 77-year-old sister was also arrested for offering the 15-year-old boy a large sum of money to change his statements. A 75-year-old man from Tilburg was sentenced to 8 years in prison in the country for sexually abusing two minor boys.
