Suspect regrets fatal Diemen fire

Gilermo I., the prime suspect of a fatal fire in a Diemen apartment in July 2017, expressed regret for what happened at the start of his trial on Friday. "I find it horrible what happened. But I can not turn back time", he said, RTL Nieuws reports.

The fire started on the first floor of the apartment building on Rode Kruislaan during the early hours of July 19th, 2017. One of the other residents of the building, a 27-year-old man, died in the fire. He suffocated due to the smoke. His body was found in his 12th floor apartment a few hours after the fire broke out. Two others were injured.

I., 25, confessed to setting the fire in his 24-year-old sister Simona's apartment. He told the court that he did not think about the dangers. His sister admitted to being involved in the plan, saying it was to get money from the insurance. According to Simona, her brother came up with the idea. She decided to go along with it "for the money".

A third suspect in this case, 27-year-old Rachied V., denies having anything to do with the fire. Other than denying involvement, he invoked his right to remain silent.
