Shooting at Rotterdam school leaves teen girl dead
A shooting at a Rotterdam school left a 16-year-old girl dead, according to police. The shooting took place on Essenburgstraat. Emergency services were called to the street and also Beukelsdijk at about 1:10 p.m. on Tuesday.
Police said the victim knew her assailant, a 31-year-old Rotterdam man, who was arrested in the immediate aftermath. He was taken into custody nearby on Bergselaan.
Authorities did not disclose how the suspect and victim are connected.
The Rotterdam girl was found killed in the indoor bicycle storage area at Rotterdam Designcollege, according to NOS and AD. The vocational preparatory school is bordered by both Essenburgstraat and Beukelsdijk in the Zuid-Holland city's Nieuwe Westen district.
"The girl's family was informed, and is being treated as witnesses," police said on Twitter.
Students were in school at the time of the shooting, and could be seen looking out the second floor windows, AD reported. Police were canvassing the area Tuesday afternoon, including on Bergselaan where the suspect's black Opel car was found with front-end damage.
