Man steps out of car wreck, only to be hit by truck on Dutch highway

A man died on the A50 highway near Wolfheze during the early hours of Monday morning. The man survived a car crash, only to be hit by a truck after he got out of the wreck, he Telegraaf reports.

The man's car crashed into a guardrail at around 1:00 a.m. The car eventually came to a stop in the middle of the highway. Bystanders helped the man out of the car. The man then walked across the highway, and was run over by a truck. He died at the scene.

The highway in the direction of Arnhem was closed until 4:30 a.m.

The police spoke to multiple witnesses and came to the conclusion that the man likely took his own life. "Everything points to suicide", a police spokesperson said to the newspaper. Whether the first accident was also an attempted suicide, is not clear. "We will never know", the police spokesperson said.

Victim support was called in for all bystanders. "A number of people were witnesses", the police spokesperson said to the Telegraaf. "If you see someone do that to themselves, that has a significant impact."
