Amsterdam stabbing suspect dies during arrest

An Amsterdam man died shortly after being arrested on Wednesday. He was arrested on suspicion of stabbing an 18-year-old woman in district De Pijp. The woman sustained minor injuries, NOS reports.

The stabbing incident happened around 2:45 p.m. The 32-year-old man attacked the woman and fled. A 41-year-old man from Amsterdam went after him and hit him on the head with a hard object.

When the police arrived, they found the suspected stabber on the ground with a head wound. Both men were arrested. The injured man resisted vehemently, until his heart suddenly stopped beating. The police resuscitated him but he died in hospital a short time later.

A doctor will determine the cause of the man's death. The incident is being investigated by the rijksrecherche, the department that handles internal investigations at government services like the police.
