Heavy rains cause flooded streets in Eastern Netherlands

Flooded streets and traffic problems were the result of heavy rains in the Netherlands on Monday afternoon and night. Oost-Brabant and the Nijmegen-Arnhem region were most affected. Between 20 and 40 millimeters of rain fell in a short period in the east and west of the country, AD reports.

In Arnhem so much rain fell that the sewer system could not handle the water mass. Several streets and bike paths in Apeldoorn flooded, resulting in manhole covers floating down some streets. The underground bicycle parking at Apeldoorn train station was also under water. Multiple places in Friesland also dealt with flooded streets.

The heavy rainfall caused multiple traffic problems, especially around Nijmegen and Arnhem. There was a significant traffic jam on the A50 at the Ravenstein exit. Many motorists sought safety on the emergency lane. At one point Apeldoornseweg and Sonsbeekweg in Arnhem looked more like small rivers than streets.
