Knife waving man arrested at Rotterdam city hall

The police arrested a 29-year-old man from Rotterdam on Thursday afternoon after he waved a knife around in the Rotterdam city hall. The man was tasered and bitten by a police dog during his arrest, AD reports.

The incident happened around 3:45 p.m. at the main entrance of the city hall on Coolsingel. Witnesses told AD that the man shouted for help and then walked up the building's stairs, where he was stopped by security guards.

The security guards called the police. The man refused to drop his knife, and the police were forced to use a taser and police dog to get him under control. The suspect was taken to hospital to be treated for a dog bite.

Police officers spoke to witnesses and are looking at surveillance camera footage, to get a broader picture of the man, according to AD.

Rotterdam mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb is currently getting extra security due to a death threat he received. It is not clear whether the mayor was at city hall when this incident happened.
