Dutch PM calls crash at Telegraaf building a "slap in the face of democracy"

"A slap in the face of the free press and the Dutch democracy", Prime Minister Mark Rutte said about an incident in which a car crashed into the building of newspaper De Telegraaf on Basisweg in Amsterdam on Tuesday morning. He called it a "targeted action" on Twitter.

"Much is still unclear, but we are alert and vigilant and the police are doing everything in their power to catch the perpetrator(s)", Rutte said.

The driver of the van, a white Volkswagen Caddy, may have fled in a dark colored Audi, the police said in a statement. The Audi was first seen coming from the direction of Amsterdam city center and was then spotted speeding towards the A10. Whether the car actually got onto the highway is unclear. The police are looking for at least two perpetrators, the person who drove the Volkswagen into the building, and the person who drove the getaway car, presumably the dark colored Audi.

De Telegraaf released two surveillance photos showing the driver of the white van. The newspaper will release surveillance video during the course of the day.
