Girl, 14, assaulted in Emmeloord over headscarf; police seek witnesses

A 14-year-old girl was assaulted on the street in Emmeloord last week after she refused to take off her headscarf. The police are looking for the perpetrators - two teenage boys - and call on witnesses to come forward.

The incident happened on Wednesday, February 21st, the police said in a statement. The girl was cycling home from school around 3:45 p.m. when she noticed to boys cycling ahead of her on Moerasandijviestraat. The boys spotted her and started laughing at her. They shouted for her to take off her headscarf. When she refused and told them to shut up, the boys got off their bikes and stormed her.

The girl was pushed off her bike and kicked as she lay on the ground. The boys cycled away and the terribly shaken girl managed to make her way home, from where the police were called.

The young victim was taken to hospital for treatment. According to the police, she sustained multiple bruises and a mild concussion.

The police are looking for the perpetrators. The boys were both around 18 years old with blond hair. They both wore short black jackets.
